Sawan 2023: Date, Significance and Rituals, All you need to Know

On every Monday of the month, devotees visit the Lord Shiva temple, fast on that day, and offer prayers to Lord Shiva.

New Delhi: Sawan or also known as Shravan month has a huge significance in the Hindu community. It is the fifth month according to the Hindu lunar calendar and falls between the month of July and August as per the Gregorian calendar. This month is devoted to lord Shiva and holds great religious and cultural importance.

Start and End Date of the month

This year the month of Sawan will start on July 4  2023 and will end on August 31, 2023. In this month devotees visit the temple of Lord Shiva and offer prayers. According to Hindu belief, it is a sacred month for worshipping lord Shiva for success, prosperity, and marriage. There are two Sawan Shivratri falls on this month, the first is on July 15 and the second is on August 14 according to Hindu Calender

Significance of  Sawan month

People perform various religious activities during the month. On every Monday of the month, devotees visit the Lord Shiva temple, fast on that day, and offer prayers to Lord Shiva. Unmarried women also fast the next day i.e. Tuesday, also known as Mangal Gauri Vrat.

Devotees visit sacred places like Haridwar, and Rishikesh to offer prayers. The month is also known for Kanwar Yatra in which devotees of lord Shiva bring holy Ganga jal from Gaumukh and carry it to Haridwar or wherever river Ganga travels. Kanwar Yatris walk miles on foot to bring Ganga Jal and carry it on their shoulder to offer Ganga Jal to Lord Shiva on the day of Shivratri. Haryali Teej also falls during the month of Sawan

 Sawan Puja Vidhi

  • People visit Shiva temple and do Jalabhishek on Shiv Ling
  • The devotees wake up early in the morning and take a holy bath and then do fasting for the whole day
  • Mahamritunjay mantra is chanted 108 times  during the day
  • Shiv Aarti and Shiv Chalisha are chanted to show devotion to lord Shiva.
