What is Subdural Hematoma? Condition that took the life of Dragon Ball’s creator Akira Toriyama at the age of 68

Akira was one of the most influential names in the Japanese Manga industry with his iconic comic series ‘Dragon Ball’ and ‘Dragon Ball Z’ being one of the best-selling & celebrated manga works in the history of mankind.

New Delhi: Leaving the entire globe in shock and sorrow, Manga legend and Dragon Ball Z creator Akira Toriyama died at the age of 68 on Friday. His production team dropped the heartbreaking news of his sad demise with a statement shared from the Dragon Ball franchise’s official Twitter (X) handle on 8 March 2024.

As per the official statement, Toriyama passed away due to a condition called ‘acute subdural Hematoma and the same has left many wondering about the same. Here’s what you should know about the condition.

What is  Subdural Hematoma?

Acute Subdural hematoma is a condition in which blood vessels rupture, causing the blood to accumulate between the brain’s covering (Dura) and its outer surface. This is usually caused by a major injury to the head which results in brain tissues getting compressed due to bleeding and can often be fatal.

While acute Subdural hematoma is the deadliest and is generally associated with a severe head injury, there are two other categories of the condition (Subacute subdural hematomas and chronic subdural hematomas)  which can even be caused by small unnoticed head injuries. Unlike acute Subdural hematoma, these types of subdural hematoma take a long time to develop as the bleeding in the brain area is slow and sluggish.

What causes Subdural hematoma?

While it is usually the head injuries that lead to the condition of Subdural hematomas, they can even get triggered spontaneously (without the baby’s major reason) at times, especially in older people. This is because, in old age, the brain starts to shrink, causing the veins to stretch out and making them more prone to injuries. Following are a few of the many situations that might increase the odds of Subdural hematoma.

  • Falling head-first from a high
  • Blow to the head received during sports/other physical activities
  • Aging
  • Infanthood
  • Prolonged use of medication that makes blood go thinner
  • Overconsumption of Alcohol
