World Heritage Day: Date, Significance and Theme

Every year, a different theme is chosen for the diversity. The current year of 2023 will carry the theme of “Heritage Changes.”

New Delhi: In the contemporary times of artificial intelligence entering our lives, it’s important for us to stay intact with our rich culture and heritage to keep ourselves enrooted. In particular, it is important for the younger generations to stay intact with our culture, important which is perfectly imbibed in our heritage sites. And thus, we celebrate April 18, as World Heritage Day. The Internationally marked day includes visiting monuments and other sites, writing articles, conducting conferences and discussion sessions, and it is also referred to as International day for Monuments and Sites.

What is the theme for World Heritage 2023?

The day got the UNESCO general conference approval in 1983, marking the significance of protecting the natural heritage. With the aim of sustainable development and cultural conservation, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) suggests a unique theme every year.

On the other hand, last year, World Heritage Day was called “Heritage and Climate” as its 2022 theme.

Tracking the background, it can be said that holding the culture intact was not initially considered internationally, until the First World War, which later led to the formation of UNESCO and the United Nations in general.

What is the significance of World Heritage Day?

The World Heritage day was created with an objective to preserve the cultural sites engulfed in the deep glories of our past traditions. It makes us remember the sacrifices and the triumphs secured by the ancestors. Preserving our heritage is crucial to maintaining ourselves and our coming generations stay connected with our cultural identity.
