According to Mayo Clinic experts, lung cancer starts when cells start growing abnormally in the lungs; this puts smokers at a greater risk of developing lung cancer, but it may also strike persons who have never smoked or who are passive smokers. The National Cancer Institute reports that lung and bronchus cancer are the leading causes of cancer-related mortality. An expected 1,03,371 instances of lung cancer were diagnosed in 2022, making it one of the top five most common cancers in both men and women.

August 1 has been designated as World Lung Cancer Day annually since 2012. The original purpose of the day was to shatter the taboo associated with the fatal sickness and spur greater research into treatments.
History
In 2012, the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS), the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), and the American College of Chest Physicians launched a campaign to raise awareness of lung cancer and associated concerns. The World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) is the premier international forum for discussing and disseminating information on lung cancer.

To help people who have been diagnosed with lung cancer as well as those who have survived it, this campaign was launched. The primary goal was to disseminate information about the most common risk factors for developing lung cancer and the best methods of avoiding this disease.
Significance
According to the statistics, the number of cancer patients in India might rise from 1.46 million in 2022 to 1.57 million in 2025. For both sexes, the most common malignancies are those of the lung and breast. Small-cell lung cancer and non-small-cell lung cancer are the two main subtypes of lung cancer based on microscopic examination of cancer cells. The mortality rate from small cell lung cancer is higher than that of non-small cell lung cancer. We may use this day to get the word out about the condition and the value of early diagnosis and treatment.
