IND vs SA, ODI Series: Indian cruise past Proteas in the first ODI to go one up in the series

The second match of the series will be played on Tuesday, December 19, at St. George’s Park in Gqeberha.

New Delhi: After an extraordinary display of bowling from Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan, taking 5 and 4 wickets, respectively, India registered an easy win against the South African cricket team to take, a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

India, who came to the series after drawing the T20I series 1-1, was looking to get a winning start in the series, as the last time they were in South Africa playing ODI, the hosts whitewashed them 3-0 in a three-match series.

The first match of the series took place at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

Proteas skipper won the toss and opted to bat first.

However, their decision was proved wrong as Arshdeep Singh 5 for 37 and Avesh Khan 4 for 27, shell-shocked the South African batting line-up, packing them all up on just 116 runs, and giving India a small target of 117 to chase in 50 overs to take the lead in the series.

Arshdeep Singh became the first Indian pacer to take a five-wicket haul in ODI in South Africa. Proteas’ all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo was the highest scorer for South Africa, with 33 runs under his name.

India started briskly in a small chase but lost the first wicket in the form of Ruturaj Gaikwad (5) with just 23 runs on board.

However, the debutante Sai Sudharsan (55*) and Shreyas Iyer (52), added 88 runs for the second wicket, to take India home with 8 wickets and 200 balls to spare to win the match and go 1-0 up in the series.

Wiaan Mulder and Andile Phehlukwayo picked up one wicket each for South Africa in bowling.

The second match of the series will be played on Tuesday, December 19, at St. George’s Park in Gqeberha.
