India lifts Thomas Cup title for the first time in history; Fans flood social media with congratulatory wishes

India has won the Thomas Cup for the first time in history at the Impact Arena in Thailand by defeating Indonesia by 3-0.

New Delhi: India on Sunday scripted history by winning the Thomas Cup for the first time. India acquired the title after defeating holders and 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0 in the final at the Impact Arena in Thailand.

Kidambi Srikanth defeated Jonatan Christie in straight games 21-15, 23-21, with India sealing the title without losing a match. Following Lakshya Sen leading India by 1-0 after beating Indonesia’s Anthony Ginting in the first match, India had taken a 2-0 lead after Satwiksairaj Rankireddey and Chirag Shetty beat Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo 18-21, 23-21, 21-19.

Meanwhile, during Lakshya’s game, he made a remarkable comeback in the second game, knocking off a four-points deficit in the third game. Sen’s victory over Ginting was 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 in a match that continued for an hour and five minutes. Ginting’s score was 21-8 in the first game but Sen edged him in the second by 21-7.
