India wins historic Thomas Cup 2022 finals against Indonesia

New Delhi: India won its first Thomas Cup trophy by beating Indonesia on Sunday in just three matches. As India won the match, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to congratulate the badminton team.

PM Modi said the whole nation is delighted with the performance of Indian players during the tournament.

”The Indian badminton team has scripted history! The entire nation is elated by India winning the Thomas Cup! Congratulations to our accomplished team and best wishes to them for their future endeavours. This win will motivate so many upcoming sportspersons.,” tweeted PM Modi.

The hope for a gold medal became very high as Lakshya Sen defeated Anthony Ginting in the first match, giving a lead to the team of 1-0.

For the single match Indian squad include Laksya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, Rriyanshu Rajawat while Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, M.R Arjun, Dhruv Kapila, Krishna Prasad Garaga, Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjaja played in double.

The match started at 11:30 AM IST onwards in Thailand’s capital Bangkok. The first match of the tournament was played on May 8. To reach the final round, India beat Malaysia by 3-2 in the quarterfinals and Denmark by 3-2 in the semi-finals.

The last tournament held in 2020 was won by Indonesia. Notably, the next Thomas Cup tournament will be organised in China in 2024.

What is Thomas Cup?

The world men’s team championship is officially called Thomas Cup. It is played between the countries that are members of the Badminton World Federation (BWF). Indonesia so far won the most number of titles in the tournament, 14 times. It is conducted biennially since 1982.

It was started in 1948-49 by George Alan Thomas. He was the most successful English badminton player of the 1900s. The first match of the tournament was won by Malaya, defeating Denmark by 8-1.
