Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia back at the top in world rankings

Punia scored a 2-pointer in the last 30 seconds to tie the score at 2-2.

New Delhi: 27 year-old, Bajrang Punia defeated Mongolia’s Tumur Ochir, to regain his world no.1 rank in 655kgs category, along with a gold medal at Matteo Pellicone Raking Series in Rome. Punia scored a 2-pointer in the last 30 seconds to tie the score at 2-2.

Punia was declared winner due to the ‘criteria’ that the last scoring point came from him. After the match Punia said, “I am happy to get some tournament competition under my belt. Wrestling is a contact sport; therefore, during these times, I am feeling lucky to be able to compete.”

Talking about his improved ‘leg defence’ Punia said, “During the lockdown phase as well as after it, I have worked very hard on my leg defence. Also, my training at the Michigan University in USA late last year has really helped me.”

Bajrang will represent India in the upcoming Asian Wrestling Championship on 9-11 April in Kazakhstan. But, before that he wishes to train abroad. After that he will represent India at the Tokyo Olympics scheduled for later this year.
