New Delhi: Argentina’s Lionel Messi’s transfer to French club Paris Saint-Germain enclosed a payment in cryptocurrency fan tokens.
On Tuesday, Messi left Barcelona and signed a two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), with an option for a third year.
In a statement released, PSG said that the tokens included in his “welcome package”, or signing on fee was provided by Socios.com.
Meanwhile, what percentage of the deal comprised the tokens but said he had received a “large number”.
However, it has also not disclosed the overall financial package.
Fan tokens are described as a type of cryptocurrency that permits the holders to vote on mostly minor decisions related to their clubs. Clubs like Italy’s AC Milan, English Premier League champions Manchester City launched tokens this year.
Meanwhile, President Nasser Al-Khelaifi on Wednesday insisted that Paris Saint-Germain are not in violation of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules by signing Lionel Messi.
Lionel Messi has arrived at PSG after the club has already signed Achraf Hakimi from Inter, Sergio Ramos, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer.
