New Delhi: Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s IPL career looks insecure as Chennai Super Kings release their list of potential retentions for IPL 2025. The list of the retained players includes the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube. Although the first list includes the name of MS Dhoni, the BCCI has not formerly released the rules of retention so far.
However, it is speculated that the franchises have been allowed to keep 6 players as potential retainers. But, this decision is yet to be ratified by the BCCI. As the time slowly ticks, the uncertainty for the legendary skipper increases as to whether he can don the yellow jersey again or not.

Surprise misses for CSK…
Although some names were not surprising in the list of player retentions, there were a few surprises as well. The exclusion of Deepak Chahar, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell and Maheesh Theekshana left the fans wondering about the prospects of CSK in IPL 2025. CSK’s bosses had earlier also asked the BCCI to bring back the old rule which allowed the players to retain a retired player in the uncapped category.
The rule will allow CSK significant leverage given that will allow them to retain their most talismanic player. However, the board has not yet announced the decision on whether to go ahead with the same or not.
According to the earlier rules, players who said goodbye to international cricket for more than 5 years are treated as uncapped players. The rule started in 2008 and was in implementation till 2021, after which it was discontinued. Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2019. If the rule comes back, Dhoni and CSK would benefit.
Dhoni would be hoping to go on a high in the IPL 2025 season after CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs in the 2024 campaign. But, his largely depends on the retention policy the BCCI drafts.
