Post-bout chaos at Siri Fort leaves MMA fighter Srikant Sekhar hospitalised

Chaos erupted at Matrix Fight Night on June 24 in New Delhi which left Sekhar hospitalised with a broken jaw, bleeding ears and brain trauma injury.

New Delhi: Indian Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Srikant Sekhar aka Captain Crazy got hospitalised after being attacked by an Afghan fighter at Siri Fort auditorium. Chaos erupted at Matrix Fight Night on June 24 in New Delhi which left Sekhar hospitalised with a broken jaw, bleeding ears and brain trauma injury. Abdul Azim Badakhshi, an Afghani MMA fighter, has been accused of injuring Sekhar.

The incident took place when Sekhar, who already won his bout against Sumeet Khade, was cheering for his teammate Seth Rosario in a bout against Zahor Shah. While he was cheering, some people from the crowd started throwing things like paper at him. Sekhar told that he got angry at the crowd and used swear words for them. An official came to escort Sekhar out of ringside as the crowd was ‘getting mad’ at him.

While they were going out, Abdul Badakshi hit Sekhar with a sucker punch from behind. Badakshi hit him twice and even the crowd broke out and stomped at Srikant Sekhar. The mob even chased Sekhar out, but he was saved by a police car nearby.

Sekhar has pressed criminal charges against the Afghan fighter as he supposedly fled to Mumbai. Matrix Fight Night has banned Afghan fighters and Ayesha Shroff, wife of actor Jackie Shroff and owner of MFN, also issued a statement which said, “There is no sport like MMA, and any kind of disrespect and hooliganism will not be tolerated by us. I have always said that MFN is a family and as such we will take care of Srikant and look forward to his speedy recovery and return to the cage.”

Srikant Sekhar was born in Odisha and has a Pro MMA record of 7-6 (Win-Loss).
