Tokyo Olympics: Sindhu qualifies for knockouts; Deepika wins, Tarundeep Rai bow out in Round of 32

Sindhu defeated Ngan Yi Cheung in straight sets 21-9, 21-16 to cruise into the elimination round of women’s singles.

New Delhi:  Star Indian shuttler PV Sindhu defeated Hong Kong’s Ngan Yi Cheung in her second Group J match of the Tokyo Olympics here at the Musashino Forest Plaza Court 2 on Wednesday.

Sindhu defeated Ngan Yi Cheung in straight sets 21-9, 21-16 to cruise into the elimination round of women’s singles.

The 26-year-old Indian wasted no time in the first set and won it with ease. The first set (21-9) lasted for just 15 minutes. In the second set, Cheung as expected tried to pull the match away from Sindhu, but the Indian showed her guile and captured important points to clinch the win in straight sets. Sindhu has progressed into the knockout rounds.

Archer Deepika Kumari storms into next round after defeating Bhu Karma

 

Archer Deepika Kumari progressed to the next round of the women’s individual archery event after defeating Bhutan’s Bhu Karna in the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics here at Yumenoshima Ranking Field on Wednesday. The India archer defeated Bhu Karma 6-0 in the 1/32 eliminations round.

The Indian archer shot 8,9 and 9 in Set 1 and her total score read 26 while Bhu Karma performed underwhelmingly and her score read 23. This allowed Deepika to take a 2-0 lead. A similar story unfolded in Set 2, and Deepika took a commanding lead in the match. By the time the third set came to an end, the Indian took a comfortable 6-0 lead, and she ended up sealing the match.

Archer Tarundeep Rai crashes out after losing to Itay Shanny

 

Tarundeep Rai crashed out of men’s individual archery after losing to Israel’s Itay Shanny in the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics here at Yumenoshima Ranking Field on Wednesday. Itay Shanny defeated Tarundeep Rai 6-4 in the 1/16 eliminations round.

Rai started with a poor 7-8-9 as the Israeli gathered the two points in the first set. Tarundeep came up with a 10-8-9 in the next against Shanny’s 8-9-9. Set three saw both archers getting on top of each other as they shared points going into fourth. The Indian veteran’s 9-10-9 in the next set gave him the crucial lead going into the decider.
