Who is Avinash Sable? First Indian athlete to win gold in 3000 meters steeplechase race at Asian Games 2023

New Delhi: Avinash Mukund Sable has made the whole nation proud yet again by becoming the first male Indian athlete to clinch the shining gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase race in Hangzhow’s Asian Games of 2023.

The 29-year-old brave man climbed up the charts with a record time of 8:19:54 which was at least 4 seconds faster than all the other competing athletes on the field. Sable’s historic feat has now made him the only Indian to bring a medal in this edition of athletics.

Previously in 2019, Avinash also broke his own national record In the 3000 meter steeplechase and made history by becoming the first Indian athlete to play in the finals of this event at the World Athletics Championship (WAC 2019).

Who is Avinash Mukund Sable?

Avinash Mukund Sable hails from a remote village in Maharashtra’s Beed district where he was born in a farmer’s family. His mother and father both used to do farming to earn themselves a livelihood and support their family.

After completing his school life, Avinash was recruited into the Indian Army as a part of the 5 Maharaj regiment and was posted in various crucial frontier locations like Siachen, Sikkim and Rajasthan. It was during his days in the Army when Avinash became curious about steeplechase and later enrolled himself in the Army’s athletics programme in 2015.
