Confirming the senior leader’s demise, Protocol Division of AIIMS stated that Jaitley breathed his last on Saturday afternoon.

Dr Harsh Vardhan, Minister of Health & President, AIIMS, New Delhi is closely monitoring the efforts on-site towards extinguishing the fire and also regarding patient care. The Minister also discussed to conduct more comprehensive special fire audit said Dr Aarti Vij, Spokesperson at AIIMS in a press statement.

The fire broke out late afternoon in the hospital and caused extensive damages to the first, second and third floor of the PC Block.

A total of 34 fire tenders were pressed into service and firefighters were able to contain the fire from spreading to nearby blocks. No casualty has been reported.

A fire broke out at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Emergency Wing.Fire brigade units have reached the spot and are fire-fighting operations are currently on to prevent its spread.

Soon after Jaitley was admitted to AIIM'S Intensive Care Unit (ICU) last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other senior officials from the ministry went on to check on the ailing minister.

In May this year, shortly after the BJP came back to power with a thumping majority, the 66-year-old had opted out of the new cabinet citing health condition. 

In February this year, owing to his ill health and treatment in the US, the portfolio was given to Piyush Goyal, who presented the interim budget announcing tax rebate for income up to Rs 5 lakh.

Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was admitted to the AIIMS on Friday morning and is currently under observation.
