The automobile sector has been experiencing a slump for several months with nearly all manufacturers reporting falling sales due to subdued consumer sentiment amid an economic slowdown.
In all his replies to the question, 'When is Tesla coming to India?', there's always been an underlying optimism but this time around the answer to the same question was clouded with a lot of skepticism. Elon Musk's answer to a tweet by Yashwant Reddy says, "I'm told import duties are extremely high (up to 100%), even for electric cars. This would make our cars unaffordable."
Musk, however, didn't provide a specific figure. While responding to a question on Twitter, he said the increase would be "something like" around the $3,000 plus figure.
The 75kWh pack had powered the entry-level (and most affordable) versions of the Model S and Model X configurations, so that change in early January effectively raised the starting price of each car by between $15,000 and $18,000.
