The Samajwadi Party had allied with Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party for the parliamentary polls and the alliance won 15 seats while SP managed to win only 5 seats. The BSP had later broken off the alliance with SP.

By-elections to the Rampur Assembly seat, considered an SP bastion, were necessitated after Azam Khan won the Lok Sabha elections from the constituency earlier this year.

In the span of a few months, multiple cases have been registered against Azam Khan, including that of land grabbing and criminal intimidation.

Several complaints have also been lodged against the controversial Rampur lawmaker for alleged land grab to build the varsity.

Azam Khan had recently stirred a controversy after he made objectionable remarks against Rama Devi when she was presiding over the debate on the Triple Talaq Bill in the Lok Sabha on July 25.

Samajwadi Party (SP) Rajya Sabha MP, Surendra Singh Nagar has resigned from the Upper House of the Parliament.

Rajnath Singh, who is deputy leader of the BJP in Lok Sabha, will be seated next to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Singh had the same seat in the 16th Lok Sabha. Other ministers in the front row include DV Sadananda Gowda and Narendra Singh Tomar.

The Uttar Pradesh Police had earlier filed a case involving murder and other charges against the legislator and nine others in connection with the accident. The accident took place on July 28 when the Unnao rape survivor was on her way to Raebareli. A truck rammed into the vehicle in which she was travelling with her two aunts and a lawyer.

Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan’s son and Uttar Pradesh MLA Abdullah Azam Khan was on Wednesday detained by the police for allegedly obstructing raids being conducted at the Maulana Ali Jauhar University in Rampur. The Uttar Pradesh police had conducted raids in the premises of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, which is headed by Abdullah's father Azam Khan, on Tuesday as well. Abdullah is the Chief Executive Officer of the University.
