Mark Zuckerberg announced that the new service will be made available in the market starting from August.

New Delhi: Meta Platforms Inc is set to witness a change in its login system used by virtual reality headset users. The development was announced by the founder and CEO of Meta Mark Zukerberg on Facebook. Zuckerberg also said that the company will roll out new Meta accounts to use with the company’s VR headsets, Meta Quest.

He added that the new service will be made available in the market starting from August. ”You won’t need a Facebook account to log into Quest starting next month. We are rolling out new Meta accounts that you can use without VR headsets instead. This will give everyone more choice about how you show up in the metaverse,” wrote Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook.

What is Meta Quest?

Meta Quest is the new name assigned by Mark Zukerberg’s company Meta to Oculus, a VR headsets company. It is said to be that a group of independent developers and hardware enthusiasts founded Oculus in 2012.

Facebook purchased the company for a massive $2 billion in 2014. It helped the social media giant to bring its market-leading VR capabilities under Facebook’s fold.

Why Mark Zuckerberg announces the change in the login system

Facebook decided to change following the social media giant faced a big backlash in 2021 from some users who already had access to the headsets using separate Oculus accounts. People said it is unfair to demand a Facebook account to log into Quest.

How the new login system help

According to the reports, the Meta accounts will provide device-level access and manage app purchases. Besides this, the Meta Horizon profile of a user will represent the users’ social presence in virtual reality.

What is Metaverse?

Metaverse offers an integrated network of 3D virtual worlds. The word, Metaverse, was first used by author Neal Stephenson in his 1992 sci-fi novel Snow Crash. In simple words, it can be said that Metaverse is a 3D place parallel to the physical world, where one can spend digital life.

This world can be accessed using a virtual reality headset. For navigation, a user uses eye movements, feedback controllers or voice commands.
