Instagram launches new feature to add pronouns in the profile

The pronouns will be displayed on the profile if the user allows it. For users under the age of 18, the pronouns will be only visible to their followers.

New Delhi: Instagram keeps on working to add news features to enhance the user experience. The social media platform announced on Wednesday that it will now let users add up to four pronouns to their bios. Users will have the choice to make them public or just visible to their followers. This new feature is available in a few countries. The company has not yet shared any plans to expand the feature in all markets.

Vice President of Product at Instagram, Vishal Shah shared a glimpse of the feature on his Twitter account, “Now you can add pronouns to your profile with a new field. It’s another way to express yourself on Instagram, and we’ve seen a lot of people adding pronouns already, so hopefully, this makes it even easier. Available in a few countries today with plans for more.”

The option to add the pronouns in the ‘Edit Profile’ section, right below the ‘Name’ column. Once the pronouns are added, they will be displayed on the profile if the user allows it. For people under the age of 18, the pronouns will be only visible to their followers and not to the public.

Pronouns are words used for referring to people. Some of the pronouns that users can add to their profiles are – they/them/theirs, she/her/hers, he/him/his. These are just an example as the list of pronouns is vast and any combination is possible.

Users will have to fill up a form at https://help.instagram.com/contact/ to submit pronouns that don’t appear as options. The company said that it “will continue to update the list of terms over time so that more people around the world can share their pronouns more easily.”

Much before Instagram considered adding the feature, users across the globe specified their gender by adding pronouns on their profile bio. However, now there is a dedicated profile section that can be used by the users to display their gender.

Instagram has not released the list of counties in which the new feature has been launched. But, some users in the United States were able to add pronouns to their profiles.
