Meta to Launch New Web Version of Threads Early Next Week: Report

Since Threads was designed for use on mobile phones, online users have only had limited access to the service thus far.

New Delhi: The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, stating individuals familiar with the situation, that Meta Platforms had plans to release a web version of its microblogging application Threads early next week.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, already said earlier this month that the firm was working on expanding the app with new features, including a web version, which will debut in the coming weeks.

Threads has just received a few new features, including a following tab and the ability to verify a link with a user’s Mastodon profile. According to the Wall Street Journal, in an effort to curb the spread of false information and propaganda, Threads began clearly labelling state-controlled media sites as of Thursday.

The source said that Meta is looking to release Threads on the web early next week, but that this schedule isn’t fixed. Since Threads was designed for use on mobile phones, online users have only had limited access to the service thus far.

Adam Mosseri, CEO of both Threads and Instagram, stated last week that the web version of Threads is now undergoing internal testing. He said that they are working on it in response to a remark on Threads. They have been testing out an early version between themselves for a couple of weeks now. However, more work is required before it can be made available to the general public.

On July 5th, Threads was released to compete with social networking site Twitter (X) and win back users dissatisfied with the recent adjustments implemented by owner Elon Musk. Users reacted positively to the social networking app, helping it quickly reach 100 million monthly active users. However, as of August 7th, statistics from SimialrWeb show that Threads’ active user base has dropped to roughly 10 million.
