P.K Rosy 120th Birth Anniversary: Google dedicates Doodle to honors first female lead in Malayalam cinema

Despite working for a short period of time, she was able to break the barriers at a time when performing arts by women was not encouraged.

New Delhi: Google today dedicated its Doodle to honor the first female lead in Malayalam cinema, P.K Rosy on her 120th Birth anniversary. She found her passion in acting at a very young age. She was born in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram on February 10, 1903.

After she played the female lead role as an Upper-caste in the movie ‘Vigathakumaran’ (The Lost Child) in 1928 P.K Rosy rose to prominence.

Coming from a scheduled caste tribe, PK Rosy not only played the role of an upper caste but also the scene showed the actor kissing a flower on her hair following which she faced criticism and backlash.

P.K. Rosy was forced to leave Kerala and reports said that she fled the state in a lorry to Tamil Nadu, married the lorry driver, and settled as ‘Rajamma’.

Despite working for a short period of time, she was able to break the barriers at a time when performing arts by women was not encouraged.
