Sarla Thukral- Google honours India’s first woman to ever fly an aircraft with a Doodle

Thukral was 21 when she was raised to new heights by taking her first solo flight and becoming India’s first woman pilot.

New Delhi: Google today honoured Sarla Thukral, the first Indian woman to ever fly an aircraft with its doodle.

Doodle was created on the occasion of her 107th birth anniversary, showcasing her extraordinary achievement.

Vrinda Zaveri illustrated the doodle.

While honouring Sarla Thukral, the company said that it’s because of her lasting legacy for women in aviation that Google decided to dedicate a doodle.

Google also said that the plan of running a doodle on Sarla’s 106th birth anniversary last year was put on hold after the tragic Air India international plane crash in Kerala that occurred on August 7, 2020.

The tragic incident killed 21 persons including both the pilots.

Thukral was 21 when she was raised to new heights by taking her first solo flight and becoming India’s first woman pilot.

Born on August 8, 1914, in Delhi, later she moved to Lahore at present in  Pakistan. It is said that Sara was inspired by her husband.

According to Google blog, Thukral completed 1,000 hours of flight time to get her licence while she was a student of the Lahore Flying Club.
It was only after this, that Sarla started to prepare to become a commercial pilot, but due to the outbreak of World War II civil aviation training was pul at a halt.
