New Delhi: The flashing “X” sign that had been installed above the San Francisco offices of the now-defunct Twitter social networking company has been taken down. The sign was reportedly removed on Monday after complaints from nearby residents, as reported by a number of media publications. CNBC reports that 24 complaints were filed with the San Francisco Department of Building Inspections, ranging from the sign being an eyesore to claims that it posed a safety risk.

Despite what Musk, the billionaire who bought the company in October 2022 for $44bn, called the city’s recent “doom spiral, with one company after another left or leaving,” the rebranded business decided to stay put in San Francisco. But alas, the enormous X didn’t linger.

Elon Musk tweeted, “Many have offered rich incentives for X (fka Twitter) to move its HQ out of San Francisco.

Moreover, the city is in a doom spiral with one company after another left or leaving.

Therefore, they expect X will move too.

We will not.

You only know who your real friends are when the chips are down.

San Francisco, beautiful San Francisco, though others forsake you, we will always be your friend.”

After the enormous X was constructed, several people took photographs and videos of it to show the world the bright light they said was making their lives miserable. A video of what looks to be employees removing the X symbol off the building’s rooftop was posted by an X user. “Just over 48 hrs after a large “X” sign with pulsating bright lights was installed on the roof of the former @twitter hq, workers dismantled and took down the sign on Monday morning. The sign was being investigated by SF officials due to lack of permits and neighbor complaints,” one user wrote.

Another user wrote, “I would be fucking LIVID. Imagine this fucking X sign right across from your bedroom.”
