New Delhi: Kolkata Metro launched an underwater metro train and on April 12, in a historic moment, a metro train went running through the tunnel under the Hooghly River. It took a journey from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade, with only officials and engineers on board. The journey was 4.8 km long out of which 520 meters were covered in the tunnel under the water. Metro Railway general manager P Uday Kumar Reddy said that the trials will be conducted for the next five to seven months and regular services will begin on this stretch. The tunnel is 13 meters below the riverbed and 32 meters below ground level.
