Ex-Pak PM Imran Khan to be released from jail as HC suspends Toshakhana case verdict

The cricketer-turned-politician was sentenced for three years in prison earlier this month.

New Delhi: Former Pakistani cricket team captain and Prime Minister Imran Khan has been allowed to be released from the jail in a verdict given by Islamabad High Court today morning.

The verdict was given by a special bench set-up for the case. The bench included Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri and also the Chief Justice Aamer Farooq himself.

Imran Khan’s lawyer Naeem Haider Panjutha gave the information through his social media page on X (Formerly known as Twitter) soon after the verdict was given. He said, “The Chief Justice has accepted our request while suspending the sentence, he has said that a detailed decision will be taken later.”

Interestingly, Imran Khan Camp has been complaining since his arrest that his life was in danger. They also claimed that the opposition had even tried to kill the ex-PM by adding poison to his food.

Imran Khan was jailed for three years earlier this month for illegally in the Toshakhana case for selling the gifts given to him on his foreign tours as the nation’s PM.

Imran Khan was found guilty of selling gifts meant for the state worth over 100 million Pakistani rupees during his tenure as PM from 2018 to 2022.

Imran on top of three years of jail was also asked to pay a sum of 1 lakh Pakistani rupees as a fine, Failing to do so would have resulted in a further six months of jail.

Notably, despite being released from jail, Imran will still not be able to contest any elections as the suspension of his political career is still in place.

The Imran Khan Camp however planning to appeal further to get both the conviction and sentence dismissed as according to them, the case does not have any basis to stay in the first place.

However, according to the former interior minister of Pakistan Rana Sanaullah, Imran Khan getting released from this case will make him a free man as he will have to face arrest in several other cases that are pending against him.
