New Delhi: Former US President Barack Obama welcomed the killing of Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahir .

Ayman al-Zawahir was killed in a drone strike carried out by the US in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul.

He further said in a tweet that it is possible to root out terrorism without being at war in Afghanistan.

“More than 20 years after 9/11, one of the masterminds of that terrorist attack and Osama bin Laden’s successor as the leader of al-Qaeda – Ayman al-Zawahiri – has finally been brought to justice,” Obama said.

The killing was announced by President Joe Biden on Monday in a televised address.

Al-Zawahiri was one of Al Qaeda’s key strategists who also served as bin Laden’s personal doctor.

Meanwhile, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has also added a “deceased” caption under the profile image of Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri on its website, after the most wanted terrorist was killed by the US in an air strike in Kabul.
