Jailed Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2023

Ms. Mohammadi is a prominent advocate for gender equality and women’s rights in Iran, a country with among of the world’s worst human rights records.

New Delhi: The Swedish Academy in Stockholm announced on Friday, October 6 that Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi will be the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her work to end the tyranny of women in Iran and to advance human rights and freedom worldwide.

Ms. Mohammadi is a prominent advocate for gender equality and women’s rights in Iran, a country with among of the world’s worst human rights records. After the death of a young Kurdish lady named Mahsa Amini, while she was in the custody of the morality police, violent demonstrations erupted throughout the nation.

According to the website for the Nobel Prize, the Nobel laureate has been arrested a total of 13 times, has been convicted five times, and has been sentenced to a total of 31 years in jail as well as 154 lashes. The website also mentioned, “Her brave struggle has come with tremendous personal costs.”

The Assembly said that the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Narges Mohammadi was in keeping with a long-standing tradition in which the Norwegian Nobel Committee has given the prize to individuals who have worked to improve social justice, human rights, and democracy.

The academy believes that the Peace Prize winners are representative of civil society in their respective nations and have championed the freedom to criticise authority and defend basic civil liberties for many years.

“Narges Mohammadi is a woman, a human rights advocate, and a freedom fighter. In awarding her this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to honour her courageous fight for human rights, freedom, and democracy in Iran,” they said.

Human rights activist Ales Bialiatski of Belarus, human rights organisation Memorial of Russia, and human rights organisation Centre for Civil Liberties of Ukraine received the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize.

The fields of science, medicine, literature, and peace are all recognised by the coveted Nobel Prizes. When Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor most known for his work with dynamite, died away in 1896, he left behind his legacy in the form of these prizes.

On the other hand, the winner of the Economic Sciences Prize will be revealed on October 9.
