Mass shootings in US surge to record numbers: 309 incidents in 2022 alone

“Mass shootings this year are on track to approach the 692 recorded in 2021, which was the highest figure since the Gun Violence Archive started tracking shootings in 2014,” said a Forbes report.

New Delhi: The flip side of gun culture in the United States hasn’t been so evident than before. This year alone, the world superpower has been rocked by spate of mass shootings in the United States, with indiscriminate firing at US parade in Chicago being the latest. During the July 4 parade in Chicago parade, a 22-year old person went on a killing spree and started firing with a heavy gun from the rooftop, instantly killing 6 persons while many others being hospitalized.

According to The Gun Violence Archive, more than 10,000 have died nationwide due to firearms, a figure much higher than suicide deaths. The GVA defines mass shootings as an incident in which 4 or more people have been shot or killed.

President Joe Biden condemned the incident and called it “senseless.”

Meanwhile, a Forbes report says that the numbers are spiking at fast pace and may surpass last year’s numbers.

“Mass shootings this year are on track to approach the 692 recorded in 2021, which was the highest figure since the Gun Violence Archive started tracking shootings in 2014,” it said.
