Peru declares 90-Day health emergency as Guillain-Barre Syndrome cases soar

The country declared a 90-day national health emergency on Monday with an alarming increase of 165 individuals affected.

New Delhi: Peru has taken swift action in response to a significant rise in cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare neurological disorder.

The country declared a 90-day national health emergency on Monday following a surge in reported cases, with an alarming increase of 165 individuals affected and four fatalities attributed to the condition. Reports indicate that Peru had already issued an alert on June 27 due to the escalating number of cases.

What is Guillain-Barre syndrome?

Guillain-Barre syndrome is characterized by the immune system attacking the nerves, resulting in neurological symptoms. It typically begins with a tingling sensation and weakness in the hands and feet, which can rapidly progress to paralysis affecting the entire body. Hospitalization is often necessary for appropriate treatment.

While the exact cause of Guillain-Barre syndrome remains unknown, it has been observed that approximately two-thirds of patients experienced symptoms of an infection, such as Covid-19, gastrointestinal infection, or the Zika virus, in the six weeks prior to the onset of the syndrome.

What are the symptoms of Guillain-Barre syndrome?

Recognizing the symptoms of Guillain-Barre syndrome is crucial for early detection and prompt medical intervention.

1- Common signs include tingling in the fingers, toes, ankles, wrists, or even the face and arms.

2- Another prevalent symptom is weakness in the legs that spreads to the upper body, potentially resulting in an inability to walk or climb stairs.

3- Patients may also encounter difficulties with facial movements, including speaking, chewing, or swallowing, and experience double vision or an inability to move their eyes.

4- Other associated symptoms include bladder and bowel control challenges, rapid heart rate, fluctuating blood pressure, and breathing difficulties. In the most severe cases, paralysis can occur.

As Peru grapples with this concerning increase in Guillain-Barre syndrome cases, the declaration of a national health emergency aims to mobilize resources, enhance surveillance, and implement effective measures to mitigate the impact of the disorder.
