Portgual woman delivers twins but has 2 different fathers: Rare pregnancy explained here

However, only a small number of such cases are reported because the likelihood of it happening is exceedingly low.

New Delhi: A 19-year-old Portugal woman was in shock after giving birth to twins with two different fathers. Yes, what you just heard is true. According to Portugal doctors, this is the 20th instance of heteroparental superfecundation, which only occurs under the following two circumstances:

1. Right before ovulation, when a woman is immunised by two different males, the sperm are present in the fallopian tubes when two eggs are discharged.

2. In the event that a woman becomes immunised with two separate males after ovulating, the sperm is capable of fertilising both eggs.

The woman’s identity hasn’t been made public yet, but she’s from southwest Goiás and gave birth to twin boys. Even the physicians have praised the woman’s pregnancy, saying that it went off without a hitch and that the infants are healthy and have no health issues.

How did the woman identify the paternity doubt?

When the woman was eight months pregnant, she took a pregnancy test, and the results came back positive—but only for one. After assessing the situation, she decided to have a sexual encounter with another man that day. But one of them takes on the role of a father to both youngsters.

Heteroparental superfecundation: What is it?

It is quite unusual to experience a heteroparental superfluence. Only animals like cats, dogs, and cows exhibit it. When a second ovum is released during the same menstrual cycle, it makes it easier for sperm from a separate male to fertilise the egg during sexual activity.

It is a purposeful strategy employed by females to maximise the likelihood of having several kids. The process does not take place very frequently, though, because it is not necessary in humans. If the sperm remains in the female system for a few days and the woman releases two eggs at once, the unusual occurrence may take place. However, only a small number of such cases are reported because the likelihood of it happening is exceedingly low.
