Rishi Sunak, the Indian origin leader who could become UK’s next PM

Rishi Sunak is the son-in-law of Infosys founder Naryana Murthy. He became a member of UK Parliament for the first time in 2015 and since then made rapid progress in the power corridors.

New Delhi: After Boris Johnson’s surprise exit as Britain’s Prime Minister, the speculations have begun about the names of leaders including the South Asian ones, who are in race to occupy the chair next. Indian origin Rishi Sunak, who has been chancellor of the UK Exchequer, is seen as the leading frontrunner for the post and may succeed Johnson. If this happens, he would become the first Indian-origin man to become British Prime Minister.

Having studied at Standford & Oxford, he made a remarkable career for himself in the government as well as outside it. He worked with the Goldman Sachs, launched his own enterprise and also worked with many MNCs in Silicon valley.

Among the recent survey of Tory members, Sunak emerged among the top contenders for the post while home secretary Priti Patel & former health secretary Sajid Javid also secured respectable support. However, 2 other names that ranked ahead of Sunak included Ben Wallace (13%) and Penny Mordaunt (12%).
