New Delhi: Pervez Musharraf, Former Chief of Army Staff and President of Pakistan died today (February 5, Sunday) at American Hospital in UAE after a prolonged illness.

Pervez Musharraf was undergoing treatment in the UAE for the past eight years. He was living in Dubai since 2016.

Earlier, the former Army chief had expressed his desire to spend the “rest of his life” in his home country.

Earlier his family had informed him about Musharraf going through a difficult stage where recovery for him was not possible and organs are malfunctioning.

What is Amyloidosis?

Amyloidosis is one of a rare disease that occurs when amyloid- a protein builds up in organs. When a person suffers from amyloid causing difficulties in the proper functioning of the organs.

Organs that may not function after amyloid is built up include the heart, kidneys, liver, spleen, nervous system, and digestive tract.

There are some other types of Amyloidosis that are caused by other diseases. Some amyloidosis types may also lead to life-threatening organ failure.

Causes

There are different types of amyloidosis. It can also be hereditary. While other types are caused with outside factors, such as inflammatory diseases or long-term dialysis.

Treatments of Amyloidosis

This can be treated by chemotherapy with strong drugs which are used to treat cancer

In some cases, organ or stem cell transplant also helps the patient to recover from this disease.
