Who is Liz Truss and how she defeated Rishi Sunak in the race for UK PM?

The 47-year-old leader started climbing the ministerial ladder in 2012 as a junior education minister.

New Delhi: Defeating former Finance Minster Rishi Sunak in the final round of the leadership contest of the Conservative Party, Liz Truss became the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Monday. She will succeed Boris Johnson as the new UK PM. She received 81,326 votes against Sunak’s 60,399. Soon after her win, she delivered her victory speech.

In her speech, she thanked everyone for putting their trust in her. She added, ”I am honoured to be elected Leader of the Conservative Party.” She also shared the same on her Twitter account.

Soon after her win, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took Twitter to congratulate her on her victory.

”Congratulations @trussliz for being chosen to be the next PM of the UK. Confident that under your leadership, the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will be further strengthened. Wish you the very best for your new role and responsibilities,” wrote PM Modi.

Who is Liz Truss?

Mary Elizabeth Truss is a British politician and the New PM of Britain. She was born on July 26 in 1975.  She is the eldest among four siblings. Her father was a mathematics professor and her Priscilla was a nurse.

She attended the West Primary School after her family moved to Scotland when she was four, living there from 1979 to 1985. She also read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Merton College, Oxford.

She married Hugh O’Leary in 2000 and has two children. The 47-year-old leader started climbing the ministerial ladder in 2012 as a junior education minister.

She also worked in the energy and telecommunications industry for 10 years as a commercial manager in her career.
