Who is Svante Paabo, awarded with Nobel prize in medicine for research on evolution

The Nobel Prize, the most prestigious & esteemed awards in the field of science is given by Nobel Assembly of Sweden’s Karolinska Institute and is worth 10 million Swedish crowns ($900,357).

New Delhi: The Nobel Prize for 2022 in medicine was on Monday awarded to Swedish scientist Svante Paabo “for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution”.

His name was announced by Thomas Perlmann, Secretary of Nobel Committee at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

When will other Nobel Prizes be announced?

Giving away the award, the Nobel committee said, “Svante Pääbo accomplished seemingly impossible: sequencing the genome of the Neanderthal, an extinct relative of present-day humans.”

The award comes at a time when the Covid pandemic posed imminent threat to human population and re-enforced the need & importance of medical research.

The announcement in other disciplines will also follow in categories like Nobel Prizes for physics on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday and literature on Thursday.

Who won the Nobel in Medicine last year?

The 2022 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday and the economics award on October 10.

Last year, the Nobel prized in medicine went to American duo David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian for the discovery of receptors in the human skin.
