World Photography Day 2023: Know history, significance and all

Nicephore Niepce created the first photograph in 1826 by covering a sheet of paper with silver chloride. He was unable to preserve the shot because he did not know how to wash the silver chloride off the paper.

New Delhi: Photography is an art form that captures and preserves a fleeting moment in time. In the modern day, it has also become one of the most extensively utilised forms of communication.

Every year on August 19th, the world celebrates the creation of the daguerreotype with World Photography Day. This day is a celebration of the artistry and ingenuity of photographers everywhere, as well as a salute to the technical breakthroughs that have revolutionised the way we click images and share memories from our lives.

To mark the day, several cities throughout the globe organise photography exhibits, seminars, and contests.

History

Nicephore Niepce created the first photograph in 1826 by covering a sheet of paper with silver chloride. He was unable to preserve the shot because he did not know how to wash the silver chloride off the paper.

Later, in 1837, Frenchmen Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce created the first photography technique, the Daguerreotype. The French Academy of Sciences first disclosed this method on January 9, 1839; later that year, the French government bought the patent and made it available “free to the world”. World Photography Day is observed annually on August 19 to commemorate the day on which this public announcement was made.

Significance

World Photography Day promotes photography’s status as an art form and inspires photographers to do new things with this medium. It inspires an appreciation for photography as a medium for conveying meaning, evoking emotion, and perpetuating memories.

The purpose of Globe Photography Day is for photographers all around the world to get together, showcase their work, and learn more about this fascinating art form.

Photographers typically share their favourite shots, tales behind the images, and insights into their creative process on this day, which is dedicated to discussing the technical elements of photography, including the development of equipment and the history of photographic methods.
