Diwali 2021: All you need to know about 5 days of festival of lights

Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Deepawali) is celebrated on the 14th day of the Krishna Paksha of the Kartik month.

New Delhi: Diwali holds a special significance among the Hindu festivities. The festivals of light- Diwali also known as Deepawali will be celebrated on November 4 this year. As per the Hindu epic Ramayana, this day is obeserved as a day when Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman returned to Ayodhya after spending 14 years of Vanwas.

Diwali is celebrated on the day of Amavasya of Krishna Paksha in Kartik month. This year, Kartik Amavasya is falling on Thursday. The 5 day celebration of Deepawali begins with Dhanteras and ends with Bhaiya Dooj.

Here’s all you need to know about the 5 days of Diwali celebration: 

1. DHANTERAS

Also known as Dhantrayodashi, the gods of wealth – lord Kubera and goddess Lakshmi. Buying something new on this day such as Jewelry, ornaments, automobile or gadgets  is considered to be auspicious on this day.

2. NARAKA CHATURDASHI

Also called Choti Deepawali, Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated on the 14th day of the Krishna Paksha of the Kartik month. People light earthen lamps and wax candles on the auspicious day to welcome goddess Lakshmi who is believed to bless them with good fortune.

3. DEEPAWALI

Diwali is the main day for Lakshmi Pujan. The day is obeserved as Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman returned to Ayodhya after spending 14 years of Vanwasa. Lord Ganesha is also worshipped on the day along with goddess Lakshmi.

4. GOVARDHAN

On this day, lord Krishna saved residents of Mathura from the anger of Lord Indra by lifting a mountain named Govardhan on his little finger to shelter them.

5. BHAI DHOOJ

Also known as Bhau Beej and Bhai Phonta, the day celebrates the brother-sister bond. Sisters prepare delicious feast for the brother and receives special gifts in return. The day arrives on the 2nd day of the Shukla Paksha of the lunar calendar.
