New Delhi: In a move that will make travelling in trains more comfortable, the Indian Railways has introduced a new and comfy design for side lower berths.

Passengers travelling on side lower berths found it uncomfortable in sleeping or resting as it used to have uneven gap in the middle. Two seats were joined together to turn it into a sleeping berth but it left a gap between the two. Many passengers used to complain of backache caused during the journey by the seating design.

That is no longer the situation now. Indian Railways has introduced the new and improvised design innovation to side lower berths, especially in sleeper class. The lower side berths will be equipped with a plank to provide extra support when folded.

Piyush Goyal shared a video on Twitter recently where an official can be seen explaining how the new seats work.

Piyush Goyal said, “Indian Railways is attempting to make the travel of the passengers convenient. This is an example of that. Some changes have been made in the seats, which will make the journey of passengers more comfortable.”

In the video, a railway official demonstrates how the new design works in a second AC coach. He showed that an extra folding has been attached to the side of the lower berth seats. The cushioned folding is the size of a bed or a bench that covers the gap when the two seats are joined.

To upgrade passengers travel experience, Railways is also redesigning the unreserved General Class coaches and 3-tier non air-conditioned Sleeper Class coaches of various trains as AC coaches.
