Six states account for 85.85 per cent of the new deaths whereas Maharashtra saw the maximum casualties (481). Punjab follows with 57 daily deaths.

The new numbers have taken India's overall cases to 1,23,92,260 with active cases at 6,58,909 and deaths at 1,64,110. Recoveries are at 1,15,69,241.

Till now, Maharashtra has vaccinated the maximum number of people with 65,19,976 doses of vaccine being administered.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 11,13,966 samples were tested on Wednesday. A total of 24,59,12,587 samples have been tested so far.

The second phase of COVID-19 vaccination commenced on March 1 for those who are over 60 years of age and for people aged 45 and above with specified co-morbid conditions.

India had started its vaccination drive on January 16 with priority given to all healthcare and frontline workers in the first phase. The second phase started on March 1 where doses are being administered to people above the age of 60 and those between 45 and 59 years with specific comorbidities.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 10,22,915 samples were tested on Tuesday. A total of 24,36,72,940 samples have been tested so far.

The top 10 districts in India with active COVID19 cases are Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur, Thane, Nashik, Aurangabad, Bengaluru Urban, Nanded, Delhi, Ahmednagar.

Some experts believe that the fall in the number of cases can be linked to the low number of tests that were conducted on Monday due to the festival of Holi.
