Only 203 out of 1,027 Delhi schools have a principal: NCPCR laments ‘sorry state of affairs’, seeks answers

The NCPCR chief has sought an explanation from the Delhi Chief Secretary and also “factual position about the vacancies of HoS/Principal and action taken in this regard” by April 19.

New Delhi: While Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia and AAP leaders went to Gujarat yesterday to ‘expose’ the plight of schools, a shocking revelation has come to light about sad state of affairs in government run schools in the national capital itself.

The National Commission of Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has found out that out of 1,207 govt schools in Delhi, only 203 have headmasters or principals and the rest are running without any head. The apex child rights body has also sought an explanation from the authorities about the vacant posts.

In a letter to Delhi Chief Secretary Vijay Dev, NCPCR chief said that its team visited a number of schools in Delhi and found discrepancies with respect to infrastructure and other aspects.

Priyanka Kanoongo - NCPCR chief

“Most of the schools visited by the NCPCR team found that the post of head of school (HoS) was vacant,” the letter said.

In the searing letter, the NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo writes that the head of school has an important role in ensuring a positive learning environment in school and their absence will have serious implications for the safety and security of children.

The NCPCR chief has sought an explanation from the Delhi Chief Secretary and also “factual position about the vacancies of HoS/Principal and action taken in this regard” by April 19.

In another letter, NCPCR chairperson said that BJP MP Manoj Tiwari had visited Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Sabzi Mandi, Timarpur, Delhi and found major issues related to the hygiene.

“In view of the seriousness of the issue, your good office is requested to take urgent action in the matter and an action taken report in this regard may be shared with the commission within seven days from the receipt of this letter,” Kanoongo said on Tuesday.
