Legendary vocalist Pandit Jasraj cremated with state honours in Mumbai

Earlier in the day, a number of people from the industry came at his residence to pay their last respects to the music icon, including filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, singer Shreya Ghoshal and Pandit Ronu Majumdar.

New Delhi: Legendary classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj’s funeral was held today in Mumbai, in presence of his family members and close friends.

The celebrated vocalist was cremated at Vile Parle’s Pawan Hans Crematorium with full state honours. Among those from the industry, who attended his last rites included composer Jatin Pandit, singer Anup Jalota, Kailash Kher.

The mortal remains of Pandit Jasraj, draped in the national flag, were kept at his Versova residence for ‘darshan’.

Pandit Jasraj died following cardiac arrest in US

The 90-year-old music doyen, who belonged to the Mewati Gharana, passed away on Monday following a cardiac arrest at his home in New Jersey, America.

He was in the US when the coronavirus-forced lockdown was announced and had decided to stay back in the country.

Pandit Jasraj’s son, Shaarang Dev Pandit, performed the last rites, which were followed by a 21-gun salute at Vile Parle’s Pawan Hans Crematorium.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, only 25-30 people were allowed at the crematorium.

Pandit Jasraj is survived by his wife Madhura, son Shaarang and daughter Durga Jasraj, both musicians.

A lot of celebrities expressed grief and sorrow over the demise of legendary vocalist Pandit Jasraj.

Former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar took to Twitter and wrote, “Words may not suffice to express the heartfelt sorrow that I feel for the passing away of Padma Vibhushan Pandit Jasraj ji. He was a musician par excellence. May his soul Rest In Peace and my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
