Read: Aamir Khan’s daughter Ira Khan discusses her struggle with depression

In a candid interview with ETimes, Ira shed light on the genetic dimension of her mental health challenges and the complexities that have shaped her perception of love and happiness.

New Delhi: Ira Khan, daughter of Bollywood luminary Aamir Khan, recently delved into the intricate layers of her struggle with depression.

In a candid interview with ETimes, Ira shed light on the genetic dimension of her mental health challenges and the complexities that have shaped her perception of love and happiness.

A Glimpse into Ira’s Struggle

Known for her transparency regarding mental health issues, Ira Khan addressed the intricate nature of her battle with depression. She emphasized that this emotional turmoil is a blend of genetic, psychological, and societal factors. Ira’s family history, especially on her parents’ side, contributes to this multifaceted experience.

Elaborating on her genetic predisposition, Ira Khan shared, “There is a history of mental health issues in my family on my mom and dad’s side. My therapist said that one of the trigger points was my parents, who handled their divorce as well as they could at that point.” Ira’s parents, Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta parted ways amicably in 2002 when she was a young child. The separation, though well-handled, had a profound impact on her psyche.

While the divorce wasn’t a direct catalyst for her depression, Ira acknowledged that her own perceptions and beliefs amplified its effects. Her parents navigated the situation thoughtfully, yet Ira’s understanding of it had a different shade. “I made this perception by watching a lot of movies. I remember being as young as 8 or 10 years old and telling myself to fake a smile, to repress my feelings… So that I grew up being slightly broken because I believed that only then people will love me. So, I systematically made sure that I turned out to be a depressed person,” she shared.

Ira Khan bravely bared the introspective journey she embarked on to redefine her understanding of love, happiness, and self-worth. She revealed how her earlier notion that one needs to be ‘a slightly broken person’ to earn love was influenced by societal narratives and cinematic portrayals. This perception, she realized, needed transformation for her own well-being.

Over the past few years, Ira Khan has emerged as a beacon of awareness, breaking down stigmas surrounding mental health. With openness and resilience, she not only confronts her own challenges but also extends support to others traversing similar paths. Her initiative in establishing a wellness center dedicated to mental health and well-being further underscores her commitment to destigmatizing these issues.

Through Ira’s story, a narrative of introspection and self-discovery unfolds—a narrative that encourages discussions on the intersection of genetics, environment, and emotional well-being. As she continues to raise her voice and share her journey, Ira Khan stands as a symbol of strength, resilience, and the power of acknowledging one’s vulnerabilities.
