13 Labourers killed in Gujarat: PM Modi expresses grief over loss of lives in road accident; Rs 2 lakh ex gratia announced

At least 13 people were killed in Kosamba city of Gujarat after a truck ran over 18 people sleeping on a footpath in the wee hours on Tuesday.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the death of thirteen labourers due to the accident in Surat on Monday night.

“The loss of lives due to a truck accident in Surat is tragic. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying that the injured recover at the earliest,” the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted.

The Prime Minister’s Office said that ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to the accident in Surat. Rs. 50,000 each would be given to those injured.

Fifteen people including seven men, seven women and a one-year-old child died were killed after they were run over by a truck in Surat’s Kosamba late Monday night, Usha Rada, District Superintendent of Police, Surat Rural said.

Six people, who suffered injuries in the accident, have been hospitalised.

The deceased were labourers hailing from Banswada district in Rajasthan. During the time of the incident, the people were sleeping on a footpath.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also condoled the deaths and wished speedy recovery of injured.

“Deeply saddened to know many labourers from #Banswara, #Rajasthan have lost lives after a truck ran over them as they were sleeping near the road in #Surat. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for speedy recovery of those injured,’ Gehlot tweeted.
