At Udaipur conference, UP energy minister’s explainer on tackling high power demand & employing women SHGs for good cause is a winner

Mr AK Sharma elaborated on how UP government ‘s experiment of involving the women self help groups for revenue collection leading to better collection efficiency

New Delhi: A two-day Energy conference was organised in Rajasthan’s Udaipur from Oct 14-15, which saw participation of Power ministers of various states, Union Power Minister, Power Secretaries of states & UTs and also several senior govt officials.

At the conference, UP Power Minister AK Sharma made a cogent & highly convincing presentation, on how Yogi govt was instrumental in averting power outages during severe heat wave and also how it ensured that power discoms functioned without any disruption.

He also shed light on Yogi govt taking rapid strides in ‘energy transition’ by rolling out new biofuel & solar policy for production of renewable energy.

Mr Sharma explained in the conference how UP managed the highest ever demand of electricity in the summer this year. He thanked the Union Government and the power Minister for supporting him in getting more coal for producing more power to meet the demand in the summer season.

He also said that he has planned for energy transition in the state. This will include renewable energy through bio fuel as well as solar energy. He said that they have recently announced the bio-fuel policy and a new solar policy is in the making.

He said that on his request the union Minister of power and his team is ready to support Electrifiction of remaining majras( sub-villages) in UP. He said that in the five year tenure of CM shri Yogi’s Government, lacs of majras have been electrified. However, some are still left. The proposal has been sent to GOI for taking them
up in the RDSS scheme.

He also said that the union Minister was agreable on his request for taking up Underground cabling of electric lines in major cities and prominent tourist locations. He added that this will also help in reducing the line losses.

Mr Sharma also talked about the process whereby UP Govt. has swapped the high cost loans of central PSUs with cheaper loans from commercial Banks.


He elaborated the UP experiment of involving the women self help groups for revenue collection leading to better collection efficiency.

He gave a number of other suggestions with regard to long term trajectory of carrier charges of renewable energy in the National grid, making a national framework for PPAs, deploying central forces for security of electric installations, and ways of reducing power theft, quickly installing pre-paid meters in govt buildings and urban amenities.
