New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday approached the Election Commission (EC) over controversial & objectionable remarks by former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, in the run up to Karnataka Assembly elections.
Sonia’s reference of ‘sovereignty of Karnataka’ during a poll rally led to a political storm, with BJP firing volleys at Congress & latter running for cover.
The BJP has taken strong objection to ‘anti-India’ statement by former Congress president in Karnataka and moved poll panel today demanding action against the latter.
A delegation of BJP today went to Election Commission office in Delhi & filed its written complaint.
“She deliberately used the word sovereignty. Congress manifesto is the agenda of the ‘Tukde-Tukde’ gang and hence they are resorting to such words. EC must take action against this anti-national act”, Union minister Bhupender Yadav told newsmen.

The row over sovereignty apparently started over a Congress tweet after Sonia’s public address in Karnataka. On Saturday, Sonia Gandhi was addressing a rally in Hubbali district of Karnataka. Cong official Twitter handle posted,
“CPP Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji sends a strong message to 6.5 crore Kannadigas: “The Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka’s reputation, sovereignty or integrity.”
The matter was latched on by the BJP, with PM Modi leading a frontal attack on the grand old party for anti-constitutional remarks.
“Do you know what does it mean…When a country becomes independent, that country is called a sovereign country. The meaning of what Congress is saying is that the Congress believes that Karnataka is separate from India”, a daily quote PM Modi as saying.
