Boycott Zomato trends on Twitter over controversial ad, delivery app apologises

Social media users have been pouring outrage on the app since Saturday and even calling out for a boycott of its services

New Delhi: Popular online food delivery app Zomato’s latest advertisement featuring Hrithik Roshan lands in trouble over hurting the Hindu sentiments and mocking the renowned Mahakal temple.

In Zomato’s recent ad, Roshan can be heard saying, “Thaali khane ka mann tha, Mahakaal se manga liya (wanted to have a food platter, so I ordered it from Mahakaal)”.

The sacred Mahakaleshwar temple, also known as Mahakal temple is dedicated to lord Shiva and happens to be among the 12 Jyotirlinga in the country that attracts devotees from across the world.

Social media users have been pouring outrage on the app since Saturday and even calling out for a boycott of its services with Netizens sharing screenshots of themselves deleting and uninstalling Zomato from their smartphones.

After the massive ire on social media and complaints from the priests of Mahakal temple, the online delivery firm apologised and issued a clarification.

In its statement, Zomato said that the ad referenced ‘thalis’ at ‘Mahakal Restaurant’, and not the revered Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple.

However, the row over the controversial ad has not come down yet and drew sharp criticism from the internet users.
