New Delhi: CBI team left TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee’s residence after questioning his for 90 minutes in alleged coal scam.

CBI has reached the residence of Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee earlier in the day.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also reached to her nephew Abhishek Banerjee’s home ahead of the CBI questioning of his wife in a coal smuggling case.

CBI has earlier issued summons for Rujira Banerjee and they visited her residence on Sunday to ask her to join the probe. CBI also asked Abhishek’s sister-in-law, Menaka Gambhir on Sunday to join the probe as well, she was questioned on Monday.


Replying the summons, Rujira sent a letter to CBI on Monday saying,” Though I am unaware of the reason for me being called for questioning or the subject matter of the investigation, you may visit my residence, as per your convenience between 11 am to 3 pm tomorrow i.e. 23rd February 2021. You are requested to kindly inform the schedule.”

After receiving summons on Sunday, Abhishek Banerjee tweeted,” At 2 pm today, the CBI served a notice in the name of my wife. We have full faith in the law of the land. However, if they think they can use these ploys to intimidate us, they are mistaken. We are not the ones who would ever be cowed down.”

During an event on Sunday evening, CM Mamata Banerjee also said,” Don’t try to intimidate us with jail. We have fought against guns and are not afraid of fighting against rats.”

The central agency is investigating the theft of coal from the mines of Eastern Coalfields Ltd. Last year, CBI filed a case against Anup Manjhi alias Lala, Eastern Coalfield Ltd. (ECL) general managers Amit Kumar Dhar and Jayesh Chandra Rai along with ECL chief of security Tanmay Das, area security inspector, Kunustoria Dhananjay Rai and security in-charge Debashish Mukherjee, according to a report by PTI.
