Delhi overtakes Mumbai in daily Corona cases: Understanding the spike in numbers, district-wise

However, the sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in Delhi has set alarm bells ringing. On Wednesday, it witnessed biggest single day hike of over 1500 cases, which is reportedly 5 times the national average. Till now, Mumbai was the hardest hit city by Covid-19 pandemic but Delhi with 1500 cases was much ahead of Mumbai with 1276 cases.

Here, we decode the spread, its containment, sample testing and also how fatal the Covid-19 virus has been for Delhi residents. These are based on official data:

Active cases in Delhi – District-Wise:

# North-West, South-East and Central Delhi are worst affected districts, with over 3,000 cases in each district
# Total number of active cases in Delhi stand at 11,591 on June 4, 2020
# Maximum number of active cases in Central, North-West and South-East Delhi, each account for almost 2,000 cases
# West, South-West Delhi are least affected with around 200-300 cases respectively

Corona + patients put in Home Isolation:

# In Central, North-West and West Delhi, maximum number of Corona + patients were put in Home isolation, each amounting to over 1,000 cases
# Home Isolation was lowest in South, South-East Delhi and North-East Delhi, with about 300-400 cases each
# New Delhi, North Delhi and East Delhi saw home isolation in moderation

More patients in home isolation than hospitals

# Apparently, many more Corona patients have been put in home isolation than those in hospitals

# According to data, only 325 patients have been put in hospital till now, out of which Central Delhi alone accounts for 122 cases

Containment Zones:

# Total number of containment zones has jumped to 148
# Highest number of 30 containment zones in South-West Delhi

# North, West and North West Delhi come close second with 17, 18 and 16 containment zones respectively
# East and North-East Delhi have least number of containment zones with 6 & 5
# New Delhi has 10 containment zones while Central Delhi has 7
# A total of 59 zones have been de-contained so far — highest 12 from the West district.

Lab Testing & Fatality rate:

# Most of the Covid-19 samples were taken, tested and report given in 48 hours (2 days)
# In about 7% cases, sample testing and lab report took about 3-10 days

# Out of 135 cases (analyzed), 37% Corona patients died before getting report
# 28% got report the same day when they succumbed to virus
# About 35% patients got the report on time but they couldn’t be saved
# These figures were arrived by analyzing the data of 135 patients who succumbed to Covid-19 virus

Till roughly a week ago, Delhi was recording less than 800 coronavirus cases per day. But in the past seven days, it is consistently recording more than 1000 daily cases. Mumbai’s daily case count, on the other hand, has been above 1,200 for the past three weeks.
