GHMC Mayor, Deputy Mayor Election: TRS, BJP in tough fight; all you need to know

New Delhi: Elections for the post of mayor and deputy mayor of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is set to be held on Thursday. The term of the present council of GHMC expired on February 10.

What were the results of the GHMC polls?

The results of the 150-seat GHMC were announced in December 2020. Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) had emerged as the single-largest party with 55 seats while BJP bagged 48 seats to become the second-largest party. AIMIM got 44 seats and the Congress Party managed to win only two seats.

How elections are held?

A total of 193 people will vote to elect the new GHMC mayor and deputy mayor which includes 150 corporators and 43 ex-officio members. A quorum of 50% attendance is compulsory for the election.

The TRS has 32 ex-officio members of the GHMC and the BJP has 2 ex-officio seats.

Who can win the posts?

TRS is likely to win both of the posts as with the ex-officio members, the party’s tally would go up to 88.
