India working to become a global hub for Artificial Intelligence, says PM Modi at RAISE 2020 Summit

The virtual summit saw industry leaders and AI experts sharing their views on the use of AI, its impact on empowering communities as well as the importance of creating a reliable infrastructure.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the RAISE 2020 Summit – ‘Responsible AI for Social Empowerment 2020 via video conference.

The virtual summit saw industry leaders and AI experts sharing their views on the use of AI, its impact on empowering communities as well as the importance of creating a reliable infrastructure.

Speaking on the occasion, PM Modi said that Raise 2020 is a great effort to encourage discussion on Artificial Intelligence.

Underscoring the importance of Artificial Intelligence in how many ways it can do wonders for the planet, PM Modi Indians are already working on AI. India has experienced that technology improves transparency and service delivery and we want India to become a global hub for AI.

PM Modi said said that we have shown how India’s digital readiness was a great help in the pandemic situation.

“India has recently adopted National Education Policy 2020 which focuses on technology based learning and skilling as a major part of education. E-courses will also be developed in various regional languages and dialects which will benefit from natural language processing to strengthen AI platforms,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi told the gathering that the government has launched Responsible AI for youth programmes this year in April. Under this programme, over 11,000 students from schools completed the basic course and are now building their projects:

Minister of Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Prime Minister is very passionate about transforming the lives of people.

“Technology keeps on evolving at a rapid pace but we welcome AI because it has the enormous potential to generate development, bring in further equity and delivery of services,” he said.

NITI Aayog CEO, Amitabh Kant said that India’s digitisation efforts through AADHAR, UPI, GST and National Digital Health Mission have created an opportunity for Artificial Intelligence to be leveraged to increase transparency and improve governance outcomes while safeguarding personal data and privacy.

“Future development and progress of the world is intricately linked with leveraging AI knowledge to push social empowerment. With more than 600 million internet users, India is very uniquely positioned to take advantage of the AI revolution, he said.
