Meet Akanksha Kumari, India’s 1st woman mining engineer

Jharkhand’s daughter is receiving appreciation from all around after breaking into the mining business, which has till now been dominated by male community.

New Delhi: Jharkhand’s Akanksha Kumari, hailing from Jharkhand, has scripted history by becoming the first woman mining engineer in the country.

Akanksha, a graduate from Birsa Institute of Technology (BIT Sindri) has broken the glass ceiling by achieving the rare feat. She has joined the Central Coalfield Limited’s underground mines in Churi region of the state.

Jharkhand’s daughter is receiving appreciation from all around after breaking into the mining business, which has till now been dominated by male community.


Praising her achievement, Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of Coal and Mines tweeted, “To promote gender equality and generate more opportunities, the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modiji has opened the doors of underground coal mines to women. Ms Akanksha Kumari becomes the 1st woman mining engineer in Coal India to work in an underground mine.”

Akanksha’s family members are overjoyed over her achievement. They say that she was always fond of coal from her childhood and wanted to work in the coalfields.
