Palghar lynching: Maha govt opposes transfer of case to CBI, files affidavit in Supreme Court

In its petition to Supreme Court, Maharashtra govt said that it has already taken action against the policemen in question, hence the demand for CBI probe is inappropriate.

New Delhi: Maharashtra government has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court, opposing the transfer of case to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In the affidavit, the state govt objected to the demand for CBI probe and has also sought penalty on the petitioner.

In its petition, the state govt said that it has already taken action against the policemen in question, hence the demand for CBI probe is inappropriate. It also says that CID team has already filed 2 chargesheets which have been submitted in the courts.

The Supreme Court, in June, asked Maharashtra government to submit their response on a petition seeking a probe by CBI or National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Palghar mob lynching incident.

3 Maha cops dismissed over Palghar moby lynching

After months of outrage over brutal killing of 2 Sadhus in Palghar district of Maharashtra by a rampaging mob, the state government dismissed 3 policemen from service, with immediate effect last month.

The dismissed police personnel were namely Assistant Police inspector Anandrao Kale, assistant sub inspector Ravi Salunke and head constable Naresh Dhodi. Salunkhe, 57, and Dhodi, 45, have been compulsorily retired while Kale, 43, has been dismissed with immediate effect, said Sachin Navadkar, Palghar police spokesperson.

The dreadful incident happened on the night of April 16, when two sadhus (Kalpavriksha Giri Maharaj and Sushil Giri Maharaj) and their driver were going from Mumbai to attend a funeral in Gujarat`s Surat amidst lockdown.

A mob in Palghar took them child lifter, dragged them out of vehicles and attacked them with stones, sticks, and sickles. The trio succumbed to the grievous injuries, sparking off nationwide anger.
